Spring Vehicle Maintenance: 8 Tips to Get Your Ride Ready for Warmer Weather

Winter weather brings more than just cold temperatures and icy roads. It also brings the risk of damaging your vehicle. While road salt makes roads safer, it can also cause rust and long-term damage if left unchecked. Below are some simple, effective ways to help you keep your vehicle in top shape this winter.

Regular Washes

Road salt buildup causes corrosion, especially on the undercarriage. Scheduling washes when temperatures rise above freezing or visiting a heated car wash helps remove salt before it causes damage.

Wax for Protection

A good wax acts as armor for your car. Apply it before winter to create a barrier between your car’s paint and the salt. If you're facing tough winter conditions, consider applying a second coat mid-season.

Use Rubber Floor Mats

The outside of your vehicle isn't the only area that needs protection. Salt and slush can cause interior damage, too. Rubber floor mats are easy to clean and prevent stains and odors, keeping your car’s interior fresh all winter long.

Protect Your Vehicle from Winter’s Worst: Salt and Damage Prevention

Denison, IA (April 19, 2024) – Maintaining your vehicle is about more than a gleaming exterior and purring engine. It's the heartbeat keeping you connected to the road, the lifeline that ensures your daily routines run smoothly. Yet, in the hustle of everyday life, car maintenance is often neglected. The following article reminds car owners of the benefits that come from routine vehicle maintenance - under the hood and around the tires.

The Logic of Keeping a Well-Maintained Vehicle

Imagine a day as nice as you could ask for, and you start your vehicle. Today, it refuses. Why? It could be the alternator, the battery, or a series of problems that are invisible until they halt your day. This is where routine maintenance comes into play.

Good Running Condition

Regular oil changes, timely (and preventive) brake pad replacements, and spark plug swaps are the unsung heroes of automotive care. By adhering to your manufacturer's maintenance schedule, you’re essentially taking steps to prevent the worst from happening. These simple tasks keep essential parts moving without issue and help prevent larger, more expensive issues further down the road. A well-oiled engine is not just a metaphor; it’s a vehicle’s guarantee of longevity.

Minimizing Wear and Tear

Each mile down the road is a mile of wear on your car. Yet, this doesn't have to equate to deterioration. Routine check-ups ensure that your vehicle's key components are not operating on the brink of failure. It's the difference between an air filter replaced at 15,000 miles and one that has ridden for twice the distance, clogged with debris and residue buildup over time.

Change It Up

Regular oil changes, tire rotations, and timely belt replacements are not trivial pursuits. They are critical in preventing catastrophic failures that may result from overuse or neglect.

Steering Clear of Trouble

Wheel alignments and balancing can tackle the unstable wear patterns that develop, leading to irregular tire wear and impaired handling and safety risks.

Evaluate the Brakes

Winter can be tough on brakes with the cold, abrasive conditions. Have your brake pads, rotors, and calipers checked for wear and tear. Squeaky brakes can be friendly nudges towards their replacement.

Check the Tires

Winter may call for snow tires and chains, but spring prefers a lighter, less aggressive tread. Examine the condition of your all-season or summer tires including tire pressure and tread depth.

Washing Your Vehicle

Salt from icy roads seems to seep into every crevice of your car. Regular washes not only keep your vehicle looking sharp but also protect it from the corrosive effects of salt and can prevent rust.

Inspect Cooling System

Engine overheating is not just an issue of the desert. The summer sun, coupled with the stop-and-go of traffic, can put strains on your engine. Ensure that your cooling system is ready to keep things cool.

Test the Battery

The summer heat isn't always a battery’s best friend. Take a quick look for signs of corrosion and have a diagnostic test done to avoid any cold-start surprises.

Maintaining Resale Value

A well-cared-for vehicle often translates to a well-priced trade-in. Prospective buyers start their assessment with the feel of the drive and the look of the interior, but it's during the meticulous inspection that the benefits of routine maintenance truly shine. Records of a well-documented maintenance history tell a compelling story and provide peace of mind to a buyer - which might just seal the deal in your favor.

Your Premier Dealership

For those in the Denison, Iowa area, there is only one destination on the road to resilience — Team Auto Group. Known as one of the Midwest’s Premier Dealerships, Team Auto Group boasts a new and pre-owned inventory of the latest Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. Team’s commitment to exceptional customer service is paralleled only by their dedication to vehicle care.

Customers who are interested in upgrading to a brand new or new-to-you vehicle, are encouraged to take advantage of Team Auto Group’s vehicle buyback program. Through the program, the dealership offers to buy out a car owner’s existing vehicle lease of qualifying makes and models.

Engine overheating is not just an issue of the desert. The summer sun, coupled with the stop-and-go of traffic, can put strains on your engine. Ensure that your cooling system is ready to keep things cool.

The summer heat isn't always a battery’s best friend. Take a quick look for signs of corrosion and have a diagnostic test done to avoid any cold-start surprises.

The following article reminds car owners of the benefits that come from routine vehicle maintenance - under the hood and around the tires.

Your Guide to Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Denison, IA – No matter how much traveling you do during the winter months, being prepared can help alleviate some of the stress that comes with winter driving. The experts at Team Auto Group have put together the following tips to help you prepare your vehicle accordingly.

Check Tire Tread Depth; Consider Snow Tires

Tires are one of the most important features of any vehicle. When left unchecked, worn tires can become a real road hazard. You can easily check your tire tread depth by inserting a quarter into your tread groove. If the tread touches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining.

Another method for measuring tread depth is a tread depth gauge. Typical tread depth gauges will measure in 32nds of an inch. Some gauges feature a needle-like design with a portion that expands to measure tread depth. Knowing that tires wear unevenly, measurements should be taken in different locations around each tire.

Winter tires, also known as ‘snow tires’ are designed for use on snow and ice. These specialized tires include a tread design with larger gaps than on conventional tires, increasing traction on snow and ice. For individuals seeking a bit more winter grip, studded winter tires may be an option worth considering. Studded tires feature small metal spikes/studs that are staggered and inserted across the tread inside 1/8” pinholes.

Add De-Icer Windshield Washer Fluid

Regular windshield washer fluid contains specially formulated cleaning agents for a streak-free shine and helps remove dirt, dust, and bugs from your windshield to ensure a clear view at all times. This type of washer fluid is not suitable for use in winter, as it’s likely to freeze.

Winter windshield washer fluid contains a de-icer, which makes it effective at cleaning your windshield even if the temperature dips to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. This fluid won’t crystalize on your windshield or freeze in your tank. During warmer months, this type of fluid should be avoided as it contains substantial amounts of methanol and easily evaporates in warm weather, which can increase your VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions if used year-round.

Create A Roadside Emergency Kit

Roadside emergency kits are easy to put together and can be the difference between being stranded and making it to your destination safely. Basic kit contents may include

At least 12-foot jumper cables

Gloves

Folding shovel

Ice scraper

Blanket(s)

Extra vehicle fuses

Flashlight with extra batteries

Pen and paper

Reflective hazard triangle/sign

Oil

Antifreeze

Various hand tools

Cat litter

Bottled water (change out annually)

Non-perishable food (change out annually)

Wash Regularly To Eliminate Road Grime

While you might think of washing your car as a summertime activity, you should wash your vehicle in the winter as well. The buildup of salt from the roads can be very damaging to vehicles. Regular washing helps prevent rust and long-term damage, which helps increase car resale values.

Team Tips for Winter Prep and Vehicle Care

Denison, IA – The decision to purchase a car may depend on whether you simply want to upgrade to a newer model or are needing a new ride due to unforeseen circumstances. There are benefits to purchasing a pre-owned vehicle that you may want to consider when shopping around for your next automobile. The experts at Team Auto Group have put together the following tips to help guide your purchasing decisions.

Selection of Pre-owned Vehicles

The market for used/pre-owned autos has grown significantly over the last several years. In fact, many dealerships offer a large selection of pre-owned vehicles from which to choose. In most cases, dealerships dedicated to customer service will go beyond their own lot to help you find the perfect vehicle to fit your needs.

Top-dollar Trade-ins

If you’re looking to trade in your current vehicle for a new or pre-owned model, you may benefit from receiving top-dollar for your trade-in. Regular vehicle maintenance and general upkeep can go a long way in maintaining your vehicle’s resale value. Team Auto Group not only provides substantial offers for trade-ins, but they also offer a buyback program. Team Auto will purchase your existing automobile outright and/or buy out your vehicle lease (for qualifying makes and models).

Budget-friendly

Pre-owned vehicles typically carry a far lower initial price than brand-new vehicles. This helps cut down the potential of a high monthly payment, making it a more budget-friendly option.

Keep Trusted Service in Mind

‘Where’ you service your vehicle should also play into your decision. Having a trusted, reliable source to help you maintain your vehicle can pay dividends in the long run. Not only does a dealership’s routine maintenance help extend the life of your car, but it can create a lasting relationship with that dealership and preserve your resale value if you decide to trade it in down the road.

This latest addition to the brand’s lineup lives up to the Dodge philosophy of putting a ferocious spin on everyday cars. So what’s the buzz about the Hornet? Aside from this being the company's newest small SUV creation since the Dodge Journey in 2008, there are plenty of reasons you should take notice of this compact-but-mighty SUV. We’ll take you through everything you need to know about the Hornet and its trim levels.

Dodge Hornet GT

The base trim level of this new platform is the Hornet GT. Those driving the most standard version of the Hornet will quickly discover that even the basic trim is anything but no-frills. Under the hood is the all-new Hurricane I-4 engine. This 4-cylinder is a 2.0-liter turbocharged powerplant that boasts 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Having that many horses means that the Hornet is one of the most powerful SUVs of its class. Translation: you can go from 0-60 mph in a brisk 6.5 seconds, which is mighty quick for a crossover.

Dodge Hornet GT Plus

Further up on the trim selection is the GT Plus. This SUV version still has the same Hurricane I-4 engine but includes several added conveniences. Drivers of the GT Plus enjoy additional standard features such as:

Remote engine start

Navigation system

Voice recognition system

Real-time traffic info

Integrated garage door opener

Power seats

Power liftgate

And more!

Dodge Hornet R/T

Bringing performance to the next level is the Hornet R/T. Dodge utilized the latest hybrid technology to boost horsepower output. As if 268 horses under the hood weren’t enough, the R/T combines the engine power of the Hurricane I-4 with a 90-kW electric motor that can beef up the horsepower rating to 288.

The R/T is Dodge’s first plug-in electric hybrid vehicle (PEHV). While some manufacturers use PEHVs to extend range, the Hornet R/T uses the system to unleash more power. This practice of performance boosting with electricity is usually found in other top-tier performance brands, but now it’s available for the daily commuter. Hybrid power in the R/T allows you to go from 0-60 in around 6.1 seconds when you use the SUV’s PowerShot mode.

However, if you’re in the mood for a little zero-emissions driving, the 15.5-kWh battery and electric motor give you an all-electric range of around 30 miles.

What Comes Standard?

The 2023 Hornet has a number of standard features that are rarely made standard in similar SUVs of this category. The most notable safety features that come stock on this vehicle include:

Forward collision warning with full-stop capabilities

Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Lane departure warning

In every trim level, there is a sleek infotainment system that consists of a 12.3-inch digital display that can be reconfigured to the driver’s preferences, with 10.3 inches of the screen dedicated to wireless interfaces such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. Multi-device Bluetooth allows two phones to be paired to the car simultaneously. The Hornet has front-row USB ports and a wireless charging area for powering up phones and devices.

While any vehicle depreciates once you’ve got the keys, there are ways you can help your ride maintain its resale
value throughout its lifetime. Here are six tips for ensuring that your vehicle retains as much value as
    possible.

1. Know Which Vehicles Retain Their Value

Not all cars preserve value equally. If that is something you want to protect, take that into account when
purchasing a vehicle. Gain an understanding of which vehicles lose their value over time faster than others. Called
depreciation, this value concept heavily influences the price of your vehicle down the road. Factors determining the
depreciation rate include mileage, quality, design, and general consumer preferences.

It might surprise you that luxury vehicles depreciate the most, particularly luxury sedans. It’s because high-end
automotives have tech and features that are not particularly valued by average consumers and have higher maintenance
    costs.

Vehicles that hold their value in terms of depreciation are ones that are popular in the current market and have
    more manageable maintenance costs.

2. Keep It Clean

Think of your vehicle as a long-term investment. Keeping that investment in good condition is a great place to start
for keeping the resale value. Clean the inside and outside of your vehicle at least once a month. Washing your car
not only makes it shimmer, but it limits the amount of corrosion caused by dirt, bird droppings, and grime. On the
inside, cleaning helps minimize the amount of wear and tear on upholstery and carpets. Having a good set of floor
mats reduces the chances of excess mud, water, or snow damaging the carpet. Avoid smoking in your car, as this
    heavily adds to depreciation.

3. Wax On, Wax Off

Just like in Karate Kid, there is a particular lesson to be learned from the seemingly mundane task of “wax on, wax
off.” Instead of teaching some martial arts moves, for the purposes of this article, the lesson is that keeping the
vehicle’s paintwork in good condition is important to resale value. Over time, paintwork can fade and discolor if
it’s not properly maintained and cared for. The effects of paint discoloration are difficult to remedy, so it’s
important to wash, polish, and wax regularly to retain your car’s ideal appearance.

4. Watch Your Miles

Today, cars are made for the long haul, but they have a general life expectancy that plays into the value. Most cars
are expected to run for around 200,000 miles. The closer you are to that milestone on the odometer, the less the car
is worth. We aren’t saying you shouldn’t drive your car–that’s its purpose. However, there are some ways you can cut
down on the number of miles you rack up.

Take vacation travel, for instance. Instead of driving straight to your destination, do some research on taking
alternative modes of transportation such as flights, trains, or buses. If available, these alternatives can
considerably reduce excess mileage by having you drive to a hub rather than the full round trip.

Whether or not you use planes, trains, or automobiles, the mileage saving options don’t stop once you get to where
you’re going. While in the area you’ll be visiting, utilize public transportation, taxis, or ride-sharing services
to get you around. The little trips add up just as much as longer drives.

5. Keep Up With Maintenance

Car maintenance, such as changing your oil, checking your tire pressure, and changing your air filter, is essential
to keeping your car running for as long as possible, without expensive and extensive repairs. It also works wonders
when it comes to slowing depreciation.

6. Maintain Service Records

Keep meticulous records detailing what services were performed, why they were performed, and who performed them. The
easiest way to do this is by keeping the physical or digital service receipts.

While any vehicle depreciates once you’ve got the keys, there are ways you can help your ride maintain its resale value throughout its lifetime. Here are six tips for ensuring that your vehicle retains as much value as possible.

1. Know Which Vehicles Retain Their Value

Not all cars preserve value equally. If that is something you want to protect, take that into account when purchasing a vehicle. Gain an understanding of which vehicles lose their value over time faster than others. Called depreciation, this value concept heavily influences the price of your vehicle down the road. Factors determining the depreciation rate include mileage, quality, design, and general consumer preferences.

It might surprise you that luxury vehicles depreciate the most, particularly luxury sedans. It’s because high-end automotives have tech and features that are not particularly valued by average consumers and have higher maintenance costs.

Vehicles that hold their value in terms of depreciation are ones that are popular in the current market and have more manageable maintenance costs.

Protect Your Paint with Professional Coating

To prevent salt and grime from damaging your car’s exterior, consider investing in professional-grade Car Paint Protection from Team Auto Group. Our protective coatings shield your paint from salt, UV rays, and other harmful elements.

Winter-Ready Tires

Good tires are essential for safe winter driving. Regularly check your tire tread depth and pressure to ensure optimal performance. At Team Auto Group, we provide full Tire Services, including inspections and winter tire installations, to keep you safe on icy roads.

Ready to hit the road this summer? Are you sure? The warmer months are the perfect time to do some traveling–make sure your ride is ready to do so. Let’s coast into some essential car care tips that’ll give you a more stress-free summer:

1. Test The Air Conditioning

Air conditioning (AC) is one creature comfort that you don’t want to be without while driving during summer. A simple way to test whether your AC is working properly is to turn it on and feel if you're getting hot air instead of cold. One way to fix the problem is to add refrigerant to the AC system. Freon AC charging products are available in stores, but you can also take it to a mechanic to get an AC boost or help diagnose other possible issues with your system.

2. Check The Tire Pressure

Before heading out on the open road this summer, make sure you inspect your tire pressure. When checking your tire pressure, you’ll want to look for signs that your tires are under or overinflated. Most cars have a recommended tire pressure of between 30 and 35 PSI (pounds per square inch). You should however reference your car owner’s manual to find out the correct tire pressure range.

3. Top-Off Engine Fluids

Summer temperatures can be hard on an engine, and a car’s cooling system prevents overheating. Stats show that engine overheating is the leading cause of breakdowns during this season. Your vehicle’s cooling system should have its coolant levels checked out.

If you are going to check the coolant levels personally, turn the engine off and wait for the engine to cool down before removing the radiator cap. Check the levels for your engine oil, brakes fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield wiper fluid.

4. Change Engine Oil

Getting your oil and filter changed is one of the simplest ways to keep your vehicle in good shape for summer. Oil lubricants keep your engine safe from wear and tear, and the oil filter helps remove contaminants from your car’s engine oil.

Changing your oil is simple. However, if this service is not done routinely, your car can develop costly oil problems, like particle buildup, that could wear down vital parts of your engine. A good rule of thumb is to change your oil every 3,000 - 5,000 miles or follow the manufacturer’s oil maintenance guidelines.

5. Replace Windshield Wipers

It’s a good idea to check or replace your windshield wipers at the end of each season.

Worn wiper blades can severely limit visibility during storms. Also, debris that collects on your windshield, such as bugs, can impair your field of view, and having wipers in poor condition can make matters worse.

6. Check Cabin Air Filter

During summer, your car’s cabin air filter serves an important role in keeping particulates from coming in through the vents. From dust to pollen, the summer heat isn’t the only thing that can make a car ride uncomfortable. It’s in your best interest and the interest of your vehicle that the filter gets checked. An old filter can also lead to problems with your air conditioning system.

7. Test Your Brakes

With rainy conditions and animals being more active in summer, having good brakes is crucial. If you experience the issue of brakes becoming spongier when you step on the brake pedal or if you hear grinding or squeaking sounds, you should have them inspected.

8. Rotate Tires

You can extend the longevity of your tires simply by rotating them regularly. That’s because not all four tires on your vehicle will experience the same rate of wear and tear. Rotating them will help even out any wear they may experience. A general recommendation is to rotate your tires every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

9. Park In the Shade

Keeping your car parked in the shade is not only a good idea to make getting back into a car more bearable, but it also helps protect your vehicle from potential damage. The sunlight could eventually lead to the dash cracking. Interior damage from sunlight can be reduced by using a sunshade for your windshield.

Also, rapid temperature fluctuations inside the vehicle can cause stress cracking in the windshield glass. Aside from parking in the shade, another way to mitigate this issue is by slowly adjusting the AC to cooler temperatures when you get back in the car.

10. Keep Engine Cool

Summer can be hard on engines, especially the engine cooling system. Issues with this system can lead to an engine overheating. Keep an eye on your engine temperature gauge. If it’s indicating high-temperature levels, this could mean your vehicle is overheating. If this happens, pull over and wait for your engine to cool down. As this is a serious problem, you should get it evaluated by a professional mechanic.

11. Make An Emergency Kit

While this tip isn’t for maintaining your vehicle's performance, having an emergency kit can be a life saver if you find yourself in a situation where there’s something wrong with your vehicle.

Some items to consider having in your kit could include:

Jumper cables

Fix-a-flat for temporarily sealing and inflating a flat tire

Water for yourself, or to use in a worst-case scenario for your radiator

Emergency flares and reflectors

Gloves

First aid kit

Flashlight

Blanket or towel
